I hope you all have had a restful few weeks! It is almost time to think about sign-ups for our Ante Up Losers Winter Exchange, so we wanted to get the wrap-up poll out of the way, to see how you thought the bang went, and to get your ideas and suggestions for next year.
I was planning to make this a super-duper well-researched and well-thought-out poll, but unfortunately I am writing it in the airport and must be done before boarding time which is in 42 minutes. So you get the things I can think of and the ability to tell us anything you want in comments (screened, unless you tell us it's okay to unscreen).

I know I missed some stuff, so here's a text box to tell me all your feels. If you prefer not to have your answers visible (they're anonymized but still visible), please comment to the post – they're screened and only the mods will see them.
And just in case there wasn't enough space, here is another!
And one more, just to be safe.
+ Sign-ups will begin as soon as we can get the collection on AO3 up and running.
+ We are going to include other types of fanworks in the exchange this year, so that might take some time to mess around with sign-up sheet and figure out size requirements. (Suggestions welcome!)
+ We will probably make sign-ups pretty quick, just a week or so, so tell all your friends! Get them excited to receive their own Losers fanwork! We usually get about 100 new Losers fanworks during this fest, and with the addition of fanworks other than fic, we hope to knock this out of the park. Let's show the multi-fandom how awesome our little corner is!
+ The 2012 Scramble collection will be open until sign-ups close, and then it will be closed and the 2013 Scramble collection will open after assignments have been sent out.
+ If you defaulted in either of the previous years, you must complete a 1000 word Losers story and upload it to the 2012 Scramble to be able to participate in this year's fest. If you'd like to produce a fanwork other than a story, please contact a mod to see what size fanwork you need to produce (until we post the size requirements).
+ We'll post the timing of sign-ups, assignments, posting, go-live, and reveals as soon as we get it worked out. We'll also post size requirements for fanworks other than fic ASAP.
+ If you will be creating a non-text fanwork, we will require you to put it on our website for the duration of the unrevealed portion of the fest (to preserve anonymity). As soon as the creators are revealed, you can ask us to take down the work and move it to your own hosting space (or you can let us keep hosting – we're happy to).
+ Please consider starting your Dear Fanwork Creator letter (you can post locked to yourself until you get your assignment if you like) so you can have a link to put in your sign-up. This helps the mods immensely. And also gets our creatorly juices flowing for works to be put in the Scramble.
+ Just sayin': This fandom is sooooooooooooo amazing. So many awesome people, so many awesome fanwork creators. Let's have a lot of fun with this!

Date: 2012-10-13 06:01 am (UTC)Thoughts on vids - feel free to unscreen
Date: 2012-10-13 08:20 am (UTC)For a big bang-sized vidding project though, I think 8 minutes is a little long, at least for a hard and fast minimum. There are different schools of thought on vidding aesthetics, but it's extremely common for vidders to use conventional rock/pop and to trim out extra choruses and noodling at the end of a song to make it tighter and more viddable. The vast majority of standard radio hits will end up being 2-3.5 minutes if one does this, which means that 8 minutes is probably, realistically, 3 vids. I've seen some meta and been in some discussions about vid length and difficulty, and the general consensus is that (assuming some degree of revision and care), there's a sharp change somewhere between 3.5 minutes and 4 minutes where the vid stops feeling like a normal, not-too-hard vid and starts feeling like an epic. Anything from maybe 4-6 minutes requires a whole different kind of structure and approach in order to not be boring. Anything 8-10 minutes and you're vidding Meat Loaf... err... I mean to say, and it's that much more difficult again and requires an even more epic structure.
If we're talking about normal music video-style vids, I think a more realistic guideline for a big bang-size work would be to vid a single song that's at least 5 minutes or to do two vids that total 6 minutes or more. (Or to use a requirement about the content of the vid rather than the length.) Expecting 8 minutes to be 2 vids is pretty much asking for both vids to be padded to meet the length requirement instead of tightened to be better vids. The fic minimum of 10k is on the lenient side for a big bang, while the vidding requirement is intimidating, and I say this as someone who finds vidding a lot easier than writing.
I just poked the people hanging out in #vidding, and the only thing they brought up was that a big bang vid ought to have a plot if it's the primary work. It's like what zoronoa said about art: a portrait of someone's face doesn't give you much to work off of if you're doing a complement, while a scene or an AU version of a character does. A narrative vid or one that sets up a clear constructed reality or crossover or something would give a complement creator something to work with. A vid that's just every time X looks hot, not so much.
You could also do it by technical aspects of vidding and how those affect effort, but that has the problem that it not only privileges one sort of vidding aesthetic over another but also favors the expensive and/or weird vidding programs over WMM and iMovie. (I don't mean "effects" here since that's usually code for "adding heart wipes and sparkles" at the press of a button; I mean stuff like the credits parodies I did. I ended up finishing them pretty fast, but each Charlie's Angels outline and each Losers credit was essentially its own minor graphics project in GIMP.) Actually, from that perspective, you could do it like some of the other requirements: 1 vid to a song over X minutes or 1 vid with significant technical complexity or any number of vids of any sort adding up to Y minutes.
Re: Thoughts on vids - feel free to unscreen
Date: 2012-10-13 05:55 pm (UTC)This is even better that you gave us a reasonable time frame to work from that then gives us an easy complement size (1.5 minutes - that's reasonable, yes? Or would you suggest 1 minute?).
I agree with the plot idea in theory, but I actually think requiring one is just not something we will do (as I could write a 10k plotless story pretty easily so it seems unfair to make that requirement of some fan works but not all (not to mention some of the works are simply never going to be able to have plot)). Besides, complements don't necessarily have to be directly based on the bang, a relationship of some sort is all that's really required, so there are any number of ways to deal with plotless bangs.
I think the same goes for technical requirements for exactly the reasons you pointed out above. One of our biggest goals with this fest is to make it inclusive; we want anyone to participate in any way they can, no matter what their skill level, available technologies, or interests.
Re: Thoughts on vids - feel free to unscreen
Date: 2012-10-13 06:21 pm (UTC)a 1-minute minimum would allow the vid equivalent of a few drabbles
1.5-2 minutes is more like a single 1k-2k story
(I realize one could theoretically do several vids for any time length, but because of the way people typically use music, that's not what's going to happen for most short time lengths in practice. 2 1-minute vids are much more work than 1 2-minute one, generally speaking.)
But, yeah, if you want to stick with that nice, clean 1/4th thing, 6 minutes vs. 1.5 minutes sounds pretty reasonable to me. That makes the bang similar (IMO) to either a couple of several-thousand-word stories or to one of those "10k" stories that eats your head and ends up more like 20 or 30k.
