Help! I need music. I need something that evokes our boys but with that we're lost feel. I need haunting melodies that remind the person of a lost home. Some spiritual but adventuresome stuff. Preferably instrumental but if there's lyrics that give the same results I'll take it too.

I've got two songs for my writing playlist for this fic and it's not getting me further than them getting out of the jungle. *headdesk*

This one is not pop, I may have posted it somewhere earlier in the Bang comments.
Minor-key Star-Spangled Banner.
http://youtu.be/M_PtnvVQhqA

This one is more of a crowd-rousing song.
http://youtu.be/gpDbvlAI_A0

This one reminds me of Cougar as a kid. Letting the dogs go, at the end, bothers me a lot--no solution to the stray's homeless, unless he knows somebody out there will take care of them. Bell Brigade has some other great CW-bluesy things I like too.
http://youtu.be/J0-HLG7Dxec

This is one of the best versions ever of this song. Reminds me more of Pooch, as if this is just how he's feeling, but not complaining of Jolene!

And of course there's just no beating a good ol' fashioned truly excellent song vid.
Bad Company. Say it with a growl...

This one's nuevo-flamenco in nature. Middle-eastern effects in it. Jesse Cook has a lot of this sort of mood, some of it more upbeat road-trip sounding.

Dry ironic from Jesse Cook here.

Will come back with more when I think of them.

with words:
Aisha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIyyPsqRweE (in French, but so wonderful)
Find Me, Ruben Olivares: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpolJIInr2M (poignant song about traveling the world looking for the one you love)
Ca Plane Pour Moi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsXknE8LOEI (in French, but great wacky hijinks BGM)
If I Could Be Where You Are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOo2QxJJKvs (so sad and wistful)

without words:
Nara: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AEU5pBxY6E (the whole of this album is good for atmospheric BGM)
Heart of Courage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYKUeZQbMF0 (very cinematic)
Poetry of the Gods: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t37hqA88t38
The Lake House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNneiPJq4m8 (makes me tear up every time)

And then there's the Top 10 Epic Songs of All Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f71DWpgO9uw (it has more ES Posthumus (they did Nara) and is good for action and fights)

Sorry, I don't have a download, but the whole "Another Happy Day" soundtrack by Ólafur Arnalds should have you covered for haunting and wistful. My favourite is Autumn Day.

I like Covenant for my Losers writing (also Toby Keith but that's... not what you're looking for here)

Try We Stand Alone and if that suits, the entire album Northern Light is just amazing for that mood, in my opinion. It's a bit more lyric heavy than their other stuff, but lyric heavy for Covenant is... not.

I also like Celldweller's instrumental only tracks for general lost boys feels. Try So Long Sentiment, which is actually pretty good in my opinion.

Hmmmm... Well, being lost/looking for a home is probably one of the most common themes in songs, and there's a WIDE variety of stuff, so I'm not sure how well this will fit (seeing as some of these are more about being home ROMANTICALLY. Depends on how picky you are about lyrics), but:

Are We There Yet - Ingrid Michaelson
Home - Barenaked Ladies
Everything Had Changed - Barenaked Ladies (the arrangement is very much NOT Losers to me, but the lyrics are at least 90% terrifyingly fitting)
Keep Falling Down - Sissel (this is one of my favourite songs for characters with nightmares)
How You Survived The War - The Weepies

Also, for instrumental stuff, there are some pretty damn cool music box covers of pop and rock classics, and a lot of them are almost creepily haunting. I don't think I have too many links, but you could check out Rockabye Baby), or do a youtube search for "music box cover", or "オルゴール" (Japanese for music box. they love that stuff. vocaloid musicbox stuff might be a good bet, because jfc, there is a lot of haunting and sad vocaloid music out there.)

Bonus: ultimate captivity/torture song: If I Burn - Emilie Autumn. (the basic sentiment is: "Give it your best shot, I will HAUNT you. You're going down with me.")

Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions. I'm aware of E.S. Posthumus and I've got a few of the suggestions downloaded and those all scream Pooch missing Jolene to me. Some scream Clay being an ass to me. So we'll see what comes of them. Thanks and now I've got some new artists to explore and experience at leisure in the future.

THANKS EVERYONE.

Things seem excellently in hand, but to add to the recs: The Children of Dune miniseries (delightfully terrible) produced a swelling, instrumental soundtrack that goes from Dramatic to peaceful and back again. I'm not sure about pining for home, but it toally evokes "woha, where are we?" vibes and then "maybe... maybe things will be okay?" if that helps.

Good luck with the words!
