Just over halfway, folks! We have 7 more weeks before bang drafts are due (and then 3 1/2 weeks for clean-up, beta, and complements).

Please respond to the top-level comments, even if you don't have any progress yet, just so we know you're here. Jump in with cheerleading anywhere you like, even if you're not technically on the team! And if you decide you *do* want to be on the team, go ahead an put up a comment at the sign-up post.

Please - especially if you're not on Dreamwidth much - sign up for reminder emails when these posts go up (click that link, or click the little bell icon at the bottom of the post). You can choose to be emailed about any post to the comm, those tagged with 2014 big bang, or just those tagged with 2014 big bang: check-in.

Please reply to everything you're signed up for. If you've got a bang and two complements, please post something on each thread so your teammates can track your progress and cheer you on! If you only comment on one thread, that's the only one that will be checked off.

Last week's check-in we weren't missing anyone - good job team! :D

If you have any questions or concerns, please Contact A Mod.

Interestingly enough, I don't find them creepy without the eyes--it just looks like shadowy or dark eyes at a quick glance, so their faces still look like human faces. (For some folks that level of realism is what puts them into the Uncanny Valley effect.) What I find tweaks my back-brain nastily is if the owner does have the eyes in, but they just don't look right. If the owner puts in the wrong kind of eyes, the wrong size, doesn't center the two together correctly, or just gets it all sloppy wrong, that will bug me. Also, many antique dolls and older baby dolls are... how to put this... crude to start with, and then battered pretty savagely to the point you wonder what on earth happened to the poor thing.
This is entirely aside from my discomfort with horror dolls deliberately made to look freakazoid, of which there are plenty among the teenage crowd, no huge surprise. I can admire a modification job very well-done, and still really dislike the *idea* they were trying to present. My humble opinion, for what it's worth, is that art that's deliberately ugly and disturbing is not automatically great art just because the image or the backstory will bug people.
It's possible that some folks don't like dolls as a class when they have never seen anything but the badly done and mindbogglingly *wrong* kinds.
It's also possible that most dolls just hit badly on where a person's preferences fall on the Uncanny Valley (for dolls, automata, robots, animations, masks, puppets, etc.) Some folks like more abstract humanoids and others prefer more realistic proportions, different apparent "ages," etc. Big anime eyes and tiny chins and beyond-Disney neoteny-proportions are a style some folks really like... it's really interesting to see the differences in what strikes doll collectors themselves as okay or what doesn't work for them.
