The blurring is an extreme focus on where the artist wants you to look. It's a bit exaggerated in these, but it looks like variations of this to short-sighted folks who take their glasses off. Or wet rained-on glasses, which made me think of Jake. The counterweight to being nearsighted, however, is often an extremely good eyesight for micro-objects up close, such as toymaking or model-building... or computer parts...
